TDS stands for Total Dissolved Solids: the sum of minerals and salts dissolved in water, measured in milligrams per litre (mg/L). It is not a hygiene indicator (regulations take care of that) but a measure of character: the lower the TDS, the lighter, more neutral and cleaner the water feels on the palate.
How it is measured and what the numbers mean
Water is considered very low in minerals below 50 mg/L, low up to 500 mg/L, medium up to 1,500 mg/L and high above that. Chile’s drinking-water standard (NCh 409) allows up to 1,500 mg/L. L3M measures 40.5 mg/L according to laboratory report IA1353 (July 2025): very low mineralization.
Why low-TDS water tastes different
With few dissolved minerals there is no salty or bitter aftertaste; the water accompanies food without competing with it. That is why low-mineral water is the choice of restaurants and bartenders , and why it makes coffee and tea taste softer.
TDS, sodium and chloride: the comparison

L3M rises at Fundo Quillaileo, Alto Biobío (Biobío Region, Chile), at the foot of the Callaqui volcano, and is bottled at the source. No chlorine, no chemical treatment: premium spring water as it leaves the mountain.
